Climate Change and the Resiliency of Filipinos

Image
The Philippines takes the crown as the most storm-prone nation on Earth and one can hardly argue against this fact with the current climate changes affecting the country. Recent weather patterns even include the recent and worrisome trend that has been nicknamed a ‘parade of storms’ seen in November 2024 where multiple storm systems have aroused. Threats of Typhoons Marce, Nika, Ofel, and Pepito brought heavy rains leading to floods, landslides, and preventive evacuations in different parts of Luzon and the Visayas, signaling the increasing difficulty to cope with the climate. You may also like how, despite all the odds, the Filipinos remain positive and demonstrate inner strength. The Sierra Madre mountain range, known as the “natural barrier” of Luzon, has an important role in mitigating the impact of typhoons when they strike the region. They are also called Outside storm tropic ar...

Breaking the Cycle of Violence: National Children's Month 2024

Image
Every November, the Philippines celebrates National Children’s Month to focus on children’s rights and well-being. This year’s theme, “Break the Prevalence, End the Violence: Protecting Children, Creating a Safe Philippines,” highlights the importance of ending violence against children and building a safer country for them to grow up in. Many Filipino children face different forms of violence, such as bullying, abuse, or neglect, often in places that should feel safe, like their homes or schools. These experiences leave deep emotional scars and affect their ability to study, make friends, and dream of a better future. As a student, it’s heartbreaking to imagine classmates going through such pain. We can all help create a safe environment for children. Schools can promote kindness and respect, while students can take part by being inclusive and reporting bullying when they see it. Parents and communities should also educate themselves about positive discipline and show children that th...

Challenges I Have Encountered

Image
This is what I learned and applied, both within and without school. For instance, in English 10, I researched listening types note taking techniques and also in all subject of course in ICT 10, I learned how to publish and post a blog. I encountered several problems in the first quarter. The problem of memory resulted in poor retention and failure to recall. Lack of motivation often results in failure to begin learning or even retaining what already was known. Other subjects were confusing, and this annoyed me. Managing the study time as required was a big challenge because studying with other responsibilities distracted me from studying. External factors like noise lead to distraction. To overcome those hurdles, I would ensure that I get enough sleep for memory consolidation. I'd set clear goals for myself and break tasks down into manageable bites that could be accomplished each day. Summarizing or teaching others what I learned will make me more engaging with the material as w...

For the Hands That Guide Us

Image
Just two months in, and we've come so far, With teachers beside us, they've been our North Star. In a year that’s short, but feels so alive, It's their steady hands that help us survive. They’re more than the lessons, more than the grades, They’ve been our calm when the excitement fades. In every challenge, big or small, They lift us higher, they catch us when we fall. In these two months, we've shared laughs and tears, Through highs and lows, they’ve eased our fears. With just over 145 days to go, They’ll keep lighting our path, helping us grow. They’ve shown us strength in times of doubt, That even in chaos, we’ll figure it out. Their late nights, their care, their hearts open wide, Are the reasons we thrive with them by our side. So here’s to our teachers, in just these two months, You’ve given us courage, you’ve given us trust. Though this year may be short, the memories stay, In your hands, we’ve found our way. We’ll cherish this time, every lesson and laugh, With ...

Creating a Safer and More Resilient Philippines

Image
The Philippines faces many challenges due to its high risk of natural disasters, which is largely because of its location and environmental conditions. Being on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the country often experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. It is also in the path of frequent and intense tropical storms. Rapid urbanization has made cities, especially in coastal areas, crowded and more vulnerable to damage during disasters. Climate change, which brings rising sea levels and more extreme weather, makes it even harder to manage and prepare for these events. The Philippine government and various organizations have taken several important steps to address these issues. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) works to organize disaster preparedness and response efforts. Local government units (LGUs) create their disaster plans and have teams ready to respond to emergencies. Community programs, like Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management ...

A Personal Message To The President

Image
Dear President Bong Bong Marcos, I hope you’re doing well. My name is Roman Querubin III, and I am a student at Ilocos Sur National High School. I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts with you about our country and our future. I know being the president weighs a lot on responsibility and I know you’re working hard for it. But anyway, at a time like this, I can’t help but have this ongoing feeling that the price of education and other basic needs seem to be getting higher, and it’s tough for many of us to keep up. I also worry about the environment and the kind of world we inherit. This makes it seem as if our voices are not being heard, and the needs of the common man-more so the unprivileged are not always put first. It is frustrating and engulfs one with thoughts of what type of future lies ahead of us. Yet, despite all these concerns, there is hope. I believe in my country and that, with the right choices, a better day awaits all of us. I hope that you will listen to ...
